GIF is a format from 1987 with a hard limit of 256 colours per frame, and PNG is what replaced it for still pictures: millions of colours, proper transparency instead of the one on/off transparent colour GIF allows, and better compression for the flat graphics both are used for. Start with the honest part

Two things this cannot do. An animation does not survive: PNG holds one picture, so a moving GIF arrives as its first frame and the rest is dropped. And the colours the GIF already threw away when it was quantised to 256 do not come back — the PNG copies faithfully what is there now, banding included. What it does give you is a file with no palette limit for whatever you do next, and transparency with soft edges available for anything you add.

Frequently asked questions

01Can I convert an animated GIF to PNG?

Only the first frame. PNG holds a single picture, so the animation cannot come across — that is true of every GIF-to-PNG converter, not just this one. What you get here is frame one at full resolution.

02Does the PNG keep the GIF transparency?

Yes. GIF transparency is all-or-nothing per pixel — one colour of the palette is declared invisible — and those pixels stay transparent in the PNG. The edges remain as hard as they were; PNG supports soft transparency, but it cannot invent it where the GIF had none.

03Will the PNG look better than the GIF?

No. A GIF holds at most 256 colours, and the ones dropped when it was made do not come back — banding and dithering patterns are copied across as they are. The gain is for what comes next: a PNG has no palette limit, so edits and additions are no longer squeezed into 256 colours.

04Are my photos uploaded to a server?

05Is it really free? Are there watermarks or limits?
